San Nicola dei Lorenesi

where: corner of Via dei Lorenesi and Via di Santa Maria dell'Anima
getting there: short walk from Piazza Navona

This tiny church opposite Santa Maria dell'Anima is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari and the Apostle Andrew. It is said to be the smallest church in Rome with a dome.
When I visited in 2013 it wasn't possible to enter the church but the single nave and two chapels, decorated with polychrome marble and gilded stucco, could be seem through the locked iron gate.
The church was completed in 1632, designed by Frenchman Francois du Jardin for the French Nationals in Rome.
Around 1733 Corrado Giaquinto was commissioned to decorate the church with frescoes of St Nicholas, the Three Theological Virtues, the Three Cardinal Virtues and Paradise in the dome, walls and ceiling.
Other artists who decorated the church were Francesco Antonozzi and Nicola Lorenese.
