Next door to the church of San Rocco is San Girolamo dei Croati, the National church of Croatia in Rome.
When the Turks invaded Croatia in the 15th century a number of Christian clerics and laymen escaped and resettled around this area by the banks of the Tiber. Around this time the site was given to the clerics who dedicated their church to Saint Jerome.
In 1587 Pope Sixtus V funded the entire rebuilding for the confraternity. The facade was built in white travertine and the Pope's heraldry was incorporated into the design.
The church interior is beautifully decorated with fresco work by Pietro Gagliardi from an 1847 restoration.
