Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio

where: Piazza di Trevi
getting there: the church is diagonal to the Trevi Fountain
open: 9:00-20:00 (closed August)

With it's famous neighbour the Trevi Fountain taking away most of the attention, the Baroque church of Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio a Trevi is easily overlooked.
The facade of the church was completed around 1650 for the Jubilee of that year.
Inside the church is one of the most bizarre practices of the Catholic church. Stored in marble urns and hidden behind the main altar, are the embalmed hearts and organs of over twenty popes dating from Pope Sixtus V in 1590 until Leo XIII in 1903.

In 2002 the church was gifted to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church by Pope John Paul II.
