San Giovanni Decollato

where: Via di San Giovanni Decollato, 22
getting there: short walk from the Capitoline Hill
open: possibly open for evening mass from 5pm

San Giovanni Decollato is a 16th century church built on land gifted from Pope Innocent VIII to a brotherhood from Florence who lived in Rome.
The confraternity dedicated their lives to helping the sick, and comforting and burying those condemned to death.
The church was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and the image of the saint's head on a platter is a reoccurring theme used in the embellishment of the church.

The interior was richly decorated by Florentine Mannerist artists working in Rome: Giorgio Vasari, Sebastiano Piombo, Giovanni Lanfranco, Cristoforo Roncalli and Giovanni Naldini.
At the high altar is the Beheading of Saint John by Giorgio Vasari dating to 1553.
The Oratory is through an entrance on the left hand side of the church and has beautiful frescoes by Jacopino del Conte, Francesco de'Rossi and Pirro Ligurio.
The church underwent a restoration in the early 18th century.
